The first British Grand Prix was held here in 1948, and it was only meant to be a one off, as the track was originally an airfield. Giuseppe Farina won the first World Championship race in 1950 for Alfa Romeo. Therefore it is recognised as the home of british motor racing. The circuit is famous for its fast corners such as Becketts. The Silverstone circuit has undergone a number of modifications since it hosted its first grand prix in 1950. This year's GP is the 40th to be held on the Northamptonshire track. Other British GPs have been held in Aintree (five) and Brands Hatch (twelve). England has also played host to three European Grands Prix: at Brands Hatch in 1983 and 1985 and at Donington Park in 1993.
